MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

The laboratory of Local and Regional Development was founded in 2015 from the Department of Economics at the University of Piraeus. Its aim is dual. Firstly, it is a meeting point of research fellows from Greece and abroad. Scientists with various research interests communicate their knowledge through the existence of the laboratory and participate in its second aim which is related to research and educational programs.

The development of a region or a country is nor responsibility or duty of specific people or institutions. It is a dynamic process among universities and governments among consulting and empirical studies and finally among members of academic community and market experts. The laboratory of Local and Regional Development is part of this process targeting knowledge and development.

The research agenda of the laboratory presents a significant number of topics and a great degree of diversification. The development of a region faces global issues and is related both to economic or technological dimensions and to social or cultural elements.

I am delighted that academic community supported the establishment of the laboratory of Local and Regional Development as mean of improvement of Greek welfare.

Sincerely,

Assoc. Prof. Sotiris Karkalakos
